Asbestos Testing: Know What Is in Your Home Before It Becomes a Health Crisis

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was used extensively in construction materials throughout most of the twentieth century. Insulation, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, textured paints, pipe wrap, roofing materials, drywall compounds, and many other common building products manufactured before the late 1980s may contain asbestos. When these materials are disturbed through renovation, demolition, normal wear and deterioration, or aging, microscopic asbestos fibers are released into the air, settle into dust, and can find their way into water supplies through deteriorating pipes and fixtures. Because asbestos fibers are completely invisible to the naked eye and have no taste or odor, the only way to know whether you have an exposure risk is to test.

Long term exposure to asbestos fibers has been linked to mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lungs, heart, and abdomen, as well as asbestosis, a serious chronic lung disease, and other forms of lung cancer. Asbestos related illness typically develops slowly over many years of repeated exposure, which is exactly why identifying and addressing potential sources early matters so much.

ETR Laboratories offers asbestos testing for a wide range of sample types. Our most common submissions come from homeowners, contractors, property managers, and environmental consultants working with older construction materials including insulation, floor and ceiling tiles, drywall compounds, pipe wrap, roofing materials, and other building products suspected of containing asbestos. We also test drinking water for asbestos fiber contamination, which is a concern for homes and communities served by aging asbestos cement distribution pipes as well as private well owners in regions with naturally occurring asbestos in local geology.

Why ETR Uses Scanning Electron Microscopy

ETR Laboratories performs all asbestos analysis using our in-house scanning electron microscope, which is widely recognized as the gold standard method for asbestos fiber detection and identification. The SEM produces high resolution images that allow our scientists to visually identify individual asbestos fibers at magnifications that no conventional optical microscope can achieve, distinguishing asbestos fibers from other similar looking particles with certainty rather than estimation.

When asbestos is detected our report includes actual SEM photographic documentation of the findings so you can see precisely what was identified in your sample. This level of documented analytical evidence is particularly valuable for real estate transactions, insurance claims, legal proceedings, regulatory compliance, and contractor verification purposes where visual confirmation of findings may be required.

Standard optical microscopy methods used by many labs cannot reliably distinguish asbestos fibers from other mineral fibers at the concentrations relevant to health and safety determinations. SEM analysis eliminates that uncertainty entirely.

How It Works

Order your test and we will mail you a sample collection kit that includes controlled containers for your sample material. Whether you are submitting a piece of suspected asbestos containing material, a dust or debris sample, a surface scraping, or a water sample, simply place your material in the provided containers and send it back to our in-house laboratory using the included return packaging. Results are delivered within 3 to 5 business days from the date your sample arrives at our lab. If you have questions about how to collect your specific sample type our customer service team is happy to guide you before you begin.

Understanding Your Results

Every asbestos test includes a free consultation with one of our in-house scientists. If asbestos is detected your report will include SEM photographic documentation of the findings along with a clear explanation of what was identified, at what concentration, and what it means for your specific situation. We will walk you through your options for remediation, filtration, or further testing as appropriate.

This test is recommended for homeowners planning renovation or demolition work on homes built before 1990, property managers, landlords, and real estate professionals assessing older buildings, contractors seeking confirmation before disturbing suspect materials, anyone who has noticed deteriorating insulation, tiles, or pipe wrap in an older home, homebuyers conducting due diligence on properties with older construction materials, city water customers concerned about aging asbestos cement distribution pipes, and environmental consultants and attorneys requiring documented SEM evidence for legal or regulatory purposes.
