Radon Testing

Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. It is found in nearly all soils. It is produced during the radioactive decaying process of the uranium that has been present in the earth’s crust since the earth was formed.

Radon is the main source of potentially harmful radiation to which the average American is exposed and it is found nearly everywhere. The Environmental Protection Agency states that long-term exposure to radon in either air or water causes cancer, primarily of the lungs or stomach. The agency also recommends radon testing of the air and water in your home.

Radon In Water

Radon is soluble in water which means that groundwater can carry radon into homes and businesses. The gas then can escape into the air when water is flushed, sprayed or heated, increasing airborne radon levels.

Radon In Air

When radon is present in the soil under a home, it seeps in through cracks and holes in the foundation. Once inside, this gas can become trapped and accumulate to toxic levels. It can be present in old homes or new ones, with basements or without.

ABOUT MEASURING RADON

The standard measurement for radon is in picocuries per liter of either air or water, expressed as pCi/L. If the level of radon in your air reaches 4 pCi/L, the EPA recommends taking action to mitigate this gas.

There is currently no federally enforced drinking water standard for radon. The EPA recommends that community water suppliers provide water with no more than 4,000 pCi/L. But, of course, there is no agency that monitors the radon levels of private wells. That responsibility lies with the homeowner.

FAQs

You can go to your local hardware store and buy an inexpensive radon test, however, there is no way for you to verify the accuracy of the lab your sample is sent to. Many of these kits also require an additional payment to process the sample once you have collected it. When you work with ETR Laboratories for your radon testing, we can test either your water or air for traces of radon. You also know you are sending your sample to a lab that is state-of-the-art and ISO 17025 accredited, which means that our accuracy has been verified by an international standards organization. We are also rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and have been providing testing services since 1995. To order your single vial air test, click here. For the double-vial test, click here. You can purchase a do-it-yourself radon test for less than $10. You will have to pay another $30 to have your sample analyzed, plus the instructions with these tests advise you to complete a second, more expensive, test that is more conclusive if you get any positive readings. You have no assurance of quality or accuracy with an off-the-shelf test. You can hire a professional to come to your home to perform a test for $150 to $200. Or you can purchase a radon test kit from ETR Laboratories for $25 to $45, depending on the test you choose, and have the assurance of an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory with 25 years of experience.
