Well Water Bacteria Count: Know Your Levels Before Problems Start

Most people are familiar with coliform and E. coli testing, but there is another equally important bacterial screen that often gets overlooked. The Standard Plate Count, also known as a heterotrophic bacteria count or total bacteria count, measures the overall concentration of bacteria living in your water. Unlike a coliform test which looks for specific indicator organisms, this test gives you a broader picture of the total microbial load in your well, helping you determine whether disinfection is needed before bacterial levels become a more serious problem.

This test does not identify specific types of bacteria. What it does is quantify how many bacteria are present overall, which is a valuable tool for monitoring the general biological health of your well over time and for assessing whether a recent well disinfection was effective.

One important thing many people do not realize is that a low bacteria count on this test does not always tell the whole story. Certain molds and yeasts naturally produce antibiotic-like compounds that can suppress bacterial growth, which means your bacteria count may appear low while fungi are quietly present in your well water. For this reason we strongly recommend pairing this test with our Fungi Count test for a more complete and accurate picture of your well’s overall microbial health.

How It Works

Order your test and we will mail you a sample collection kit with easy to follow instructions. Collect a water sample from your tap and send it back to our in-house laboratory. Results are delivered within 2 to 3 business days from the date your sample arrives.

Understanding Your Results

Bacteria count results are compared against established benchmarks to determine whether your well water is within an acceptable range or whether disinfection is recommended. Every test includes a free consultation with one of our in-house water quality experts. Once your results are in, reach out by phone or email and we will walk you through what was found and help you determine the right next steps if anything of concern is detected.

This test is recommended for private well owners as part of routine annual monitoring, anyone who has recently had their well disinfected and wants to confirm it was effective, households that have noticed changes in water quality, taste, or odor, and anyone considering adding our Fungi Count test for a more thorough assessment of microbial content.
