Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. It is found in nearly all soils. It is produced during the radioactive decaying process of the uranium that has been present in the earth’s crust since the earth was formed.

Radon is the main source of potentially harmful radiation to which the average American is exposed and it is found nearly everywhere. The Environmental Protection Agency states that long-term exposure to radon in either air or water causes cancer, primarily of the lungs or stomach. The agency also recommends radon testing of the air and water in your home.

Radon in Air

When radon is present in the soil under a home, it seeps in through cracks and holes in the foundation. Once inside, this gas can become trapped and accumulate to toxic levels. It can be present in old homes or new ones, with basements or without.

Radon in Water

Radon is soluble in water which means that groundwater can carry radon into homes and businesses. The gas then can escape into the air when water is flushed, sprayed or heated, increasing airborne radon levels.

About Measuring Radon

The standard measurement for radon is in picocuries per liter of either air or water, expressed as pCi/L. If the level of radon in your air reaches 4 pCi/L, the EPA recommends taking action to mitigate this gas.

There is currently no federally enforced drinking water standard for radon. The EPA recommends that community water suppliers provide water with no more than 4,000 pCi/L. But, of course, there is no agency that monitors the radon levels of private wells. That responsibility lies with the homeowner.
