Chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium) is a product of industrial processes. It is known to cause cancer and targets the respiratory system, kidneys, liver, skin and eyes. It’s found at higher-than-recommended levels in many water systems.
Is Chromium-6 (hexavalent) in My Water Harmful?
Chromium-6 or hexavalent chromium is far more harmful than other forms of chromium. Industrial operations that manufacture dyes, stainless steel, paints, textiles, copier toner or preserved woods may contaminate soil or water with chromium-6. If you have any suspicion that your water is contaminated with chromium-6, it is important to test your water immediately. It is highly toxic and causes stomach, respiratory and gastrointestinal cancer, as well as many other problems.
How Much Does a Chromium-6 (hexavalent) Water Test Cost?
This extremely important water test can be obtained from ETR Laboratories for just $50. Please call us for more information or to get any questions about this test answered.

This is the right test for you if:
There is no federal limit for chromium-6 on its own, so a passing total chromium result can hide it. This test gives you the chromium-6 number by itself.
It is a strong fit in these situations:
Our Basic, Premium, and Ultimate panels list total chromium only, so chromium-6 is always ordered separately.
How this test works
Chromium-6 has its own method, EPA 218.7, and its own bottle. The sample is buffered to a pH above 8 so chromium-6 stays stable, and the method calls for analysis within 14 days.
What's in your kit
What this test screens for
Hexavalent Chromium (Chromium-6, Cr VI)
Measured on its own, usually by ion chromatography with a color reaction, and reported in parts per billion (µg/L).
In August 2024, the EPA concluded chromium-6 is likely to cause cancer in humans when swallowed.
Shipping & turnaround
Ship this $50 kit for an $8 flat rate, or pair it with other tests to reach $100 and get free shipping. The return label is prepaid. Because the method has a 14-day window, mail your sample soon after you collect it.
“The test was simple—collect a water sample from a faucet in the home. We sent the test to the lab and received a water quality analysis within a few days. The test included analysis of the water sample for the presence of: coliform bacteria, E. coli, iron, lead, pH, turbidity, and nitrates/nitrites.”

“Incredible lab, they really care about their customers. As someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about water quality, they took their time to help me understand everything about my water quality situation.”

“I’ve used ETR for several tests, both water and air. The test kits are easy to understand and the reports are very comprehensive. But what really makes them stand out is their quality of service. There is a lot of terminology in these reports that I don’t understand, but their staff is very knowledgeable and always available to assist. They really take their time to review the results with you on the phone, and answer any questions you may have.”

No. The EPA’s 100 ppb limit applies to total chromium, and no separate federal limit exists for chromium-6. California set an enforceable 10 ppb chromium-6 limit in 2024.
No. A total chromium test adds all forms together and does not report chromium-6 on its own. You need this separate test to get that number.
Yes. EPA Method 218.7 uses a buffered, pH-adjusted sample so chromium-6 does not convert. Use the bottle in your kit and follow its instructions.
Probably not at useful levels. Strips sold by one retailer read from 50 to 5,000 ppb, far above California’s 10 ppb limit.
No. Boiling can concentrate dissolved metals in the water that remains. A qualified water professional can recommend treatment if your result is high.
No. Private wells fall outside the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, so testing is up to you as the owner.
No shared results. Our laboratory holds our clients privacy to the highest regard, your results and information will never be shared. Be aware that state certified laboratories may be required to report your results to various government agencies.
