Water Alkalinity: The Hidden Factor Behind Pipe Corrosion, Scale Buildup, and Appliance Damage

Alkalinity describes your water’s ability to neutralize acids and resist changes in pH. On its own it is not a direct health concern but what it tells you about your water chemistry has significant practical implications for your plumbing, your appliances, and your health.

For drinking water the generally recommended alkalinity range is 20 to 200 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, with many water quality professionals considering 80 to 120 milligrams per liter optimal. Outside that range problems tend to follow in both directions.

Water with low alkalinity is corrosive. It attacks metal surfaces including copper pipes, fittings, and water heaters, and over time leaches metals from your plumbing into your drinking water. This is one of the primary reasons homes with acidic low alkalinity water are more likely to have elevated copper and lead levels at the tap. Blue-green staining on fixtures and sinks is a common visual sign of corrosive water chemistry.

Water that is too alkaline presents different concerns. High alkalinity water causes scale buildup inside pipes, water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines, reducing efficiency and shortening appliance lifespan. It can also leave skin feeling dry and hair looking dull. Some research suggests that highly alkaline water may be beneficial for people managing laryngopharyngeal reflux, commonly known as LPR or silent reflux, due to its acid neutralizing properties. There is also emerging interest in whether alkaline water affects creatinine levels and kidney function though the evidence on this remains limited and anyone with kidney concerns should consult a healthcare provider.

Alkalinity and pH are closely related but they are not the same measurement. pH tells you whether your water is acidic or alkaline at a given moment. Alkalinity tells you how well your water resists changes in pH over time which is a more reliable indicator of your water’s long term effects on your home and health.

How It Works

Order your test and we will mail you a sample collection kit with easy to follow instructions. Collect a water sample from your tap and send it back to our in-house laboratory. Results are delivered within 1 to 2 business days from the date your sample arrives at our lab.

Understanding Your Results

Alkalinity results are reported in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate and interpreted in the context of your overall water chemistry. Every test includes a free consultation with one of our in-house water quality experts. If your alkalinity levels come back outside the recommended range we will walk you through what that means for your household and what treatment options make the most sense for your situation.

This test is recommended for homeowners experiencing pipe corrosion, blue-green staining, or premature appliance failure, anyone who wants to understand their full water chemistry before investing in treatment or filtration, households where a previous lead or copper test came back elevated, anyone managing LPR or other acid related conditions who wants to understand their water’s buffering capacity, and anyone considering a water softener or pH adjustment system who wants to confirm their baseline first.
