SAWS draws water from the Edwards, Carrizo, Simsboro, Trinity, and Wilcox aquifers, with Canyon Lake and purchased regional water rounding out the supply. The Edwards Aquifer's naturally high bromide content means that when chlorine is used to disinfect the water, it reacts with that organic matter to produce a higher concentration of brominated trihalomethanes than typical surface-water systems generate.
