Microplastics & Nanoplastics

What are Nanoplastics and Microplastics?

Microplastics: These are plastic particles larger than 1 micrometer (1 millionth of a meter) but smaller than 5 millimeters.

Nanoplastics: These are even smaller, with particles less than 1 micrometer in size.

Where are they found?

Bottled Water: A study by Columbia and Rutgers universities found that a liter of bottled water can contain an average of 240,000 tiny plastic fragments, with 90% being nanoplastics.

Tap Water: While less studied, microplastics have also been detected in tap water.

Other Sources: Microplastics can also be found in various other sources, including food, air, and even personal care products.

Potential Health Concerns:

Unknown Long-Term Effects:The long-term health effects of ingesting nanoplastics and microplastics are not yet fully understood.

Potential for Absorption: Some studies suggest that nanoplastics, due to their small size, may be able to penetrate biological membranes and potentially enter the bloodstream.

Possible Impacts: Research on animals and cells suggests that nanoplastics may impact various organs and systems, potentially affecting cell function, immune response, and inflammation.
This test quantifies nano and microplastics in water. Using a scanning electron microscope, our laboratory will give you particle counts of each plastic size detected. Please feel free to reach out with any questions regarding this test. For a limited time, ETR Labs is offering this important test for $149.
